What Is utm_term? When to Use It

Understand the term parameter, its original paid-search purpose, and sensible ways to use it today.

utm_term is an optional UTM parameter traditionally used to identify the paid search keyword associated with a visit. It can also hold another meaningful targeting term when your tracking plan defines one.

Classic paid search usage

In a search campaign, term can identify the keyword or keyword theme behind an ad: utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=running_shoes&utm_term=trail_shoes.

Do you always need it?

No. Source and medium are usually more important, and campaign is often essential for grouping activity. Leave term empty when it does not add useful information.

Good uses beyond keywords

  • Audience or targeting theme in a paid campaign.
  • Product category in a catalog campaign.
  • Search intent group such as high_intent.
  • A controlled internal dimension your team has documented.

Do not duplicate other fields

Do not put a creative name in term when it belongs in utm_content. Do not put the campaign name in term. Each field should answer a different reporting question.

Use a controlled vocabulary

Term values should be lowercase and predictable. Choose either running_shoes or running-shoes and use that convention everywhere. Use the BestUTM builder when you need to add a term to a campaign link.

Term versus content

Term usually describes a keyword or targeting concept. Content describes a creative or link variation. For example, utm_term=trail_shoes and utm_content=video_1 answer different reporting questions.

If the platform already supplies reliable keyword data, do not invent a manual term value just to fill the field. Empty is better than misleading.

Make the rule usable for the team

A tracking rule only works when the person creating the link can find it at the moment of work. Put the convention in the campaign brief, template, or handoff document rather than relying on a senior marketer to explain it each time.

After the campaign, keep the final links and the reasoning behind unusual values. This turns one-off decisions into reusable team knowledge.

Keyword insertion needs care

Some advertising systems can insert dynamic keyword-related values. Treat this as a configuration decision, not a cosmetic option. Check how empty values, special characters, match types, and destination redirects behave before using dynamic terms across a campaign.

For manual links, a concise controlled term is usually easier to audit than a long, automatically generated phrase.
