UTM Examples for Newsletters

Tag newsletter links consistently and use content values to compare link positions.

A recurring newsletter can use a stable source and medium:

utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=october_digest&utm_content=hero_button

Use text_link, product_card, or footer_link for other placements in the same send.

Product email

utm_source=product_email&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=trial_expansion&utm_content=upgrade_cta

Keep one convention for recurring sends and record it in the campaign sheet. Build the final links with the BestUTM builder.

One send, one campaign structure

Keep the campaign stable for all important links in one newsletter. Change content for the hero button, product card, and footer link so you can compare placement without splitting the send into unrelated campaigns.

For recurring newsletters, decide whether the campaign represents the editorial issue, promotion, or broader initiative and use that rule consistently.

Before publishing

Check that the destination page is the one intended for this audience and that the final URL contains the same values shown in the campaign plan. A link can be syntactically valid and still point to the wrong product, offer, or market.

Save the decision

Keep this pattern in a shared campaign document so the next person can create a matching link without guessing. The goal is not to create more parameters; it is to make the same reporting decision repeatable.

Example link set

For one send, use the same source, medium, and campaign in all links, then vary only content: hero_cta, article_1, product_card, and footer_cta. That structure reveals which parts of the message earned clicks.

Review the final email after the sending platform has applied any link rewriting.
